The Never Ending Tour, by the numbers
7 June 1988
The first night, in Concord, California, with a three-piece band led by G. E. Smith.
~100 shows a year
Through most of the 1990s. 1999 alone ran to 117 concerts.
3,000+
Concerts played since 1988 โ more than the rest of his career combined, several times over.
Tony Garnier
On bass since 1989, and the longest-serving musician in Dylan's entire history.
The name was coined by a journalist from an offhand remark, and Dylan has resented it ever since โ most entertainingly in the liner notes to World Gone Wrong, where he insists the Never Ending Tour ended in 1991 and lists a series of invented successors instead.
